unable to read data from hard disk

hi

System able to detect the disk but unable to boot the OS.

I have booted from WIn9x startup disk and entered to dos.it goes to the drive letter like c: and D: but if i give dir command, it says unable to read data from drive.

I haven't formatted and kept alive.
Think it should be badsector of harddisk

Any free dos application for data recovery suggested?

Well, with Win9x your best bet would be scandisk. You should be able to run it from the command line if you boot off an emergency disk. If you don't have one, you can download one from http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

It might be able to fix whats wrong with it.
