I used the Windows 98 sound redcorder all along to convert mp3 files to wav files and back. But in XP, it can only read wav files and can do no conversion. Will it let me use my old sound recorder? (in the accessories\entertainment folder of start menu programs). I tried to take the XP calculator to 98 and didn't work. Will XP be compatible with the old? I remember how strict DOS was when using external commands from older and newer versions. I think this will be the same way. Or is there a free software that I can convert mp3 files to wav and back?

winamp allows the conversion from mp3 to wav files and Im pretty sure that audio catalyst does a convert from wav to mp3 and will normalize and do all the good stuff. I think mmjb does a wav to mp3 conversion too. You can check those out...all free, or were when I used them...
