How well do you think this Gateway system will perform with XPpro on it? Perhaps if I turned off some of the bells and whistles? It's my grandmother's pc so she's not a "power" user...meaning she rarely has more than a couple programs open at once.
The xp requirements page recommends 128mb of ram, which I have, but just wanted some insight.
Would Windows 2000pro be a better, more efficient alternative?

It would probably run okay if you turned of the new visual themes and some of the "cool" affects like fading menus and such.
Also if you double the swap file size, that should help too.
However, if you can, adding another 128 megs of ram would be the best solution. XP home will run decently with 256 with all the extras turned on. (As long as your not doing like photoshop or something, of course)
Yeah, go with 256mb of RAM, and you're beautiful. WinXP requires 64mb last I checked, but 128mb really just isn't enough.

my bro just got a new dell 2.4 with only 128 mb of ram running xp pro
I cleaned it up as best I could...but still dog slow...needs that next 128mb upgrade.
I also built a machine for my buddy Tommy....my old Gateway 466 celeron. It has 256mb of ram and responds faster than the dell.....
RAM is *CRUCIAL* (no advertising intended).
Should run .... minimally.
As mentioned by OG, disabling stuff is WAY beneficial...especially the following:
System Restore
Fast User Switching
XP Themes

XPs minimum requirements for it to run are 128mb ram. So it will run but it will not allow for many of the extras like browsing the web with lots of browsers or multi-tasking since XP will be using the bulk of the memory. More ram would be very bennificial.

My friend's laptop running Windows XP Pro on PIII 500mhz and 64mb ram...
I borrowed his for 2 weeks when my pc broken down and I was surprised at how well windows xp runs on it especially when over 5 windows of Internet Explorers runnings without any crashing or whatsoever but it's so slowwww! My first impression was that it requires a much needed bigger ram.
So running XP on 128mb isn't a problem for you but its handy to have 256mb just to be ahead.
