.htaccess assistance required

Help please!!!

I am currently using .htaccess and .htpassword for my security system.

It is doing everything I need with one exception. I have a number of programs that need to know who is signed in. Is it possible to get that information and, if so, how?

Hoping someone can be of assistance.

Apache should set the server variable $REMOTE_USER when a user logs in via htaccess so try grabbing that.

I too am in need as Nomad was. Could you please elaborate?
I have htaccess working but cannot find any log that is written to when users authenticate. Can you please let me know what I am doing wrong or where I should look for this log?
