key based ssh permissions?

Hello,

I've been studying lots of tutorials on ssh key based authentication. I understand a lot of it.

I don't understand what the permissions need to be on these files/directories for remote ssh to work and why:


.ssh

id_rsa

id_rsa.pub

authorized_ keys ( is this a file or a directory?)

known_hosts
