Ok got a problem. I am trying to upgrade the memory in my girlfriends computer. It's a HP Pavilion 6630. It originally came with 64Mb's memory....PC100 DIMM 168Pin chip. It 's maximum is suppose to be 2 x 128Mb DIMM chips to total 256Mb's.

Well I bought one 128Mb DIMM chip and put it in and the computer BIOS reads it as 128Mb's but M$ Windows will only read it as 82Mb's. It doesn't matter whether I have in both the 128Mb chip and the 64Mb chip or just the 128Mb chip windows will only see it as 82Mb's

What gives?

You look in the BIOS? It should give the installed memory in there. If it says the correct ammount there, at least you know it isn't a hardware problem.

Yeah the BIOS on the computer was reading it correctly which is why I couldn't figure out what the problem was.

I figured it out though. In the windows system configuration utility under the advanced section is a setting that when checked limits the amount of memory windows uses to whatever is specified in the box next to the checkbox. Somehow it was checked and set to 82Mb's. Everything is working fine now.

Thanks.
