Looking for Dev

I am on a hunt to find a developer for my new Toronto Based Start up. (you don't have to be in Toronto or even Canada)

I am in the early stages of development, but we have a "working" title, that I own the domains for. I have been in contact with advisers and investors located here in Toronto Canada to fund the project.

I was offered seed money privately from an investor but he suggested that I build a prototype and then he would bring me to the rest of his partners in order to get real money. This is the route I have decided to follow as It will benefit the company in the long run. He told me that he loved my idea, and loved my ideas for monetizing.

I am excited to get the ball rolling on my start up. and get a prototype built within the next few months.

Lets get to the details:

-I don't have much skill at development. I do know some very basic web design and have worked a lot with different CMS, but have never built anything major. So I don't know exactly what will be required to build a prototype.
-That being said, im 100% sure of 1 thing: NO FLASH!
-From what i understand that would mean most of the development would be done in HTML5, and Java, but other than that you may have ideas in what other code would be best.

-We would need to build a voting system
-an audio player
-the site will be heavily based on the social interactions between users, so user profiles will also need to be built.




1) Project Details: (be as specific as possible): We are currently in the early stages, but would be willing to offer equity incentives (a percentage of the company), and when we take the company back to the investor you will be offered a full time position as "Senior VP of development" and if already not in Toronto you will be flown out, and offered a very competitive salary. You will also receive a Cash Bonus, to be paid weather or not you decide to join the company full time.

2) Payment method/ details (Paypal, check? Timeline?): you can be payed how ever you proffer, paypal, or check when that time comes. I would like to have a solid prototype that we can call a beta and have a small set of beta users built within 3-4 months. (this timeline is something we will have to discuss)

In the software world a prototype is eons away from a product that would be considered "beta". Website prototypes typically have one or two functions that actually work; most everything else is just the front facade to represent what it will eventually do. The main objective with a prototype is to demonstrate the proof of concept.

A product in "beta" is a completed product that has undergone all unit testing and is ready to be stress tested by a subset of users to find bugs that don't show up in unit testing.

So... which one do you really want-- a prototype, or a completed product? Assuming prototype, what is your budget for getting it created? Is your angel investor willing to invest $500 into its development? That much should get you a prototype with enough working parts (or simulated working parts) to give his partners a solid idea of what the completed website will be.

Well the investor has advised me to try to get something built on my own without any of his money.

At this point I think a prototype would work. 500$ to get a prototype built is something that I would be willing to pay. What would the time frame be on a prototype (I understand you have no information or basis to answer but a general rough estimate)

That being said. If we wanted to proceed with development, and work to something more solid that we can say is a early alpha that is mostly built. How much would something like that cost me and on what kind of time frame.

Like I said. Im not a developer, I dont know much about the actual coding aspect for a project of this size. This is why I dont know how to properly judge what needs to be done. That being said I am not completely clueless when it comes to this topic. Just clueless at coding more than basic HTML or building on top of a CMS....

Well like you said, any ballpark quote without knowing anything about the project would be meaningless to you. Also, you may want to look for a designer along with a developer, since a prototype is mostly about the user interface and not so much about the website actually working. To put together a flashy prototype I would start with a designer who has an online portfolio that wows you.

Then you can bring in a developer to get a few of the key pieces working-- or at least make them look like they work. It sounds like your primary objective at this point is to score funding, which requires the ultimate sales pitch (elevator pitch if you prefer), which starts with an amazing prototype, which if it were me I would want a designer with a good reputation to deliver.
