I would like to know what you people think of my web site design at http://www.stubby.ca

This is my second site I designed from scratch getting a lot of good information from this site/forum.

Sincerely,

Personally, I like the design - it looks nice, but there isn't much information to get/keep regular visitors. Maybe some more information about the flavors that were carried in the bottles would be interesting.

Although the prolific use of browns sort of goes along with the subject, it strikes me as rather plain, and a bit gloomy. The contrast of certain rather dark shades with the black text (like on the "home" page) is a little too low for comfortable reading, and using big bold text all over does not really help, either.
I'd suggest lightening up the whole design, and reduce the size and boldness of the text.

Furthermore, I've never been a great fan of splash pages; although your "home" page does provide an introduction, it could easily be integrated into the design and layout of the rest of the pages. By the way, asking your visitors to be patient while pages load beforehand looks a bit weak, may indicate that your pages need a couple of visits to the gym, and may even scare off visitors.

Big page elements seem to dominate your design, anyway; large buttons, big images, etc. They make the pages look rather crowded and thereby slightly messy, while there actually isn't that much on them measured by the amount of text or the number of buttons and pictures.

Slimming down some of those page elements will open up the pages, making them better overseeable and appear less crowded.

Lastly, seconding dragon, I think you have the opportunity to offer much more info to your visitors, making their visit a richer and more rewarding experience.

A content tip.

Stubbys can still be found semi imbeded in the soil in remote fishing locations :)

I'm in the central Ontario bush alot (not for fishing). I come across 10 - 20 stubbys a year.

A good effort - i'll give it a B+

GOOD POINTS
==========
• Wide range of content - your site is interesting to a beer-a-holic like me

• I like what you've done with the stubby bottle nav-bar on the side

BAD POINTS
=========
• MY PET HATE is folk using the "Times New Roman" font for web pages. Times New Roman was meant for writing letters and looks crap from a design point of view. Try Tahoma, Verdana, Arial, Sans Serif etc or be adventurous and try a slightly different font - but make sure it is a windows default one otherwise it wont show on all browsers.

• Colour scheme - black text on brown background is a bit iffy. Trouble is that no colour really goes with a brown background. Maybe change it from brown to a golden beer-ish colour with bubbles?? (just a daft suggestion) Use the same font size throughout and 2 (possibly 3) text colours (one for headings, one for normal text) but again thats just a suggestion.

• Ditch the splash-screen page (as mentioned above)

• The nav-bar has a scroll bar on it. not usually good from a design point of view - so get rid of it by putting a "noresize" tag on your frameset code or reducing the length.

==========

As this is only the 2nd page you've designed your still learning your trade - but its a good effort so far.

I get a vertical and horizontal scrollbar when the content fits into my 1600 x 1200 screen in opera, no idea why I should see them.

Further you have used Times New Roman as a font, which is fine. However, you have set the colour to black, and on a brown backing, that makes it look unpleasant.

There is no need for a splash, and I believe there should be no need to have frames on the site in any way. However, I guess that is a personal preference.

Further, your code contains no DOC-Types, and therefore does not validate. Your code also does use a few deprecated tags.

Have a look at www.w3schools.com to learn a few coding techniques that will come in handy.
