I assume it sells things?
You would install a Joomla system, and find a nice free template to use,
then customize it. Plug-ins for "ecommerce", store, shopping cart, etc.

Or, you could just go with an ecommerce system like Magento.

If this is for a class project I doubt the instructor would allow them to use OTS software. They would be expecting them to design and develop everything from scratch.

The first thing you would need to do just like with any software you intend to develop is to capture the requirements. What does your boutique software/website need to do? Once you have that defined then you can start figuring out the design.

I would imagine at least some if not all the high level requirements can be derived from whatever instructions/parameters your instructor provided for the assignment. So start from there.

You'll need to create a MySQL database ... done through your webhost admin panel.
You can use Notepad++ for all of your coding needs.
It's a great, free editor that can highlight lines of codes ... very helpful.
Google Notepad++

Other than that, it's a homework project and I don't do homework ... that's your job.

I'm having a hard time believing you have a class instructor that is throwing you into
a project like this without any direction ... has the instructor taught students about
MySQL, PHP, XHTML, XML, CSS ... etc?

What kind of class is it?

I'm not being funny, but if you know MySQL, PHP and HTML then you have all the tools you need. If this is your final year, you should have no problem at all in doing this, as you should have been taught all the necessary tools. If you are struggling, you should get help from your tutor. We're not here to do your homework.

The key to working out any project is in the planning. You need to sit down and break down the problem to specific components of logic etc. in a suitable manner to your teachings. Try working out your logic and model (you should be familiar with framework models from your course teachings) and take it from there.

I have no problem helping with specific issues you might have regarding syntax and certain functionality.

As I questioned in post #5, what is this final year class?
Is it web design, or web development?

I'm with Blue Panther on this one ... should you not have at least had some PHP/MySQL?

If your class was unrelated to scripting, let us know.

Masters, as in degree?! In two years? Your final year project is a web development?

Doesn't add up for me that a masters course, in only two years, would let you have a website as a final project. No where near complex enough or long enough.

We're willing to help with specifics, but we're just so confused about your course and project!

I'm guessing this all happens because it's an IT course?
Is is a college like Full Sail?
