Looking for a PS 6 tutorial for an effect

I hae no idea what this effect is called, so I'm hoping I can explain it clearly.

I'm looking for a tutorial that will show me how to change a colour photo of say a busy street, then turn it into a black and white image, but have 1 car or something stay with all it's full colours.

Anyone have any links or know what it's called so I can search for it?

If this is for Photoshop, I can tell it to you now?

1) Make two layers, the exact same image.
2) On the bottom layer, 'create new fill or adjustment layer', it looks like a circle that is half black and white (at the bottom of the layers palette), click on that and select 'Hue and Saturation'.
3) When the Hue and Saturation window pops up, select the box 'colorize' in the bottom right hand corner. This will allow you to make the image only one series of colors. Select the middle bar called 'Saturation' and drag it all the way to the left. You now have a black and white image (hide the top layer if you can't see it)
4) Now, select the top layer, and 'add a mask' to the layer. In the layer palette it looks like a square with a dotted circle in it at the bottom buttons.
5) Now, use a paint brush or the selection tool and fill in black what you want to hide. In your case, paint (make sure in the mask part of the layer) everything but the car away in black. This will leave your top car layer in color exactly on top of a black and white layer.

what i would do would select he car with the lassoo tool copy it to a newlayer, then select image-<desaturate (i can remeber wich menu, but its desaturate). that should do the trick. i doubt youll get a tutorial seeing as its quite easy to pull off

Wow, that seems to simple :thumbsup: I'll see how far I get before I get stuck :p

I tried it that way whack :) I gave up coz I couldn't get the lassoo on it perfect, this is for a very very picky and annoying client, so the better I can do it, the faster I get rid of him

My only gripe with the lasso tool and popping it on a new layer is:
1) You won't ever get that smooth a crop line
2) If you screwed up and later decided you wanted to add another element of the pic in color, you have to start all over again. Plus if you delete the pic too much, you can go back and fix it without dumping the original picture.

And desaturation works fine, but you can't take it off without undoing everything. Hue and Saturation layer can be removed if it looks bad.

Use the mask on the layer, pic a really small paintbrush and paint it away nice on the edges. You can use a bigger brush to paint away the rest of it later. If you ever go to a company with a design for print or web firm, they won't appreciate the lasso trick because it never comes out perfect -- and once you start working with cutting away the background from trees and flowing hair, you'll see the difference.

Both ways work fine and will accomplish what you need, just use this for reference if you have to do some hardcore photoshop design. All those crappy pictures you see at http://www.gap.com on their sites and their stores, that's what we have to do... because it needs to be perfect at all times. Sucks.

good idea:). lassoo can get good but you need to set it on polygon and it takes ages :p

BTW -- I forgot to tell you a little trick.

If you paint a dot and (while holding shift) paint another dot somewhere, it will connect those two points and paint it in automatically for you. That helps if you are doing something with a long straight line you want to be smooth and clean.
