I am new at creating websites but have made a handful. I recently built one that is displaying incorrectly only on ie9. Every other browser displays fine. Can someone please assist in my errors? Thanks
ERROR
an attribute value specification must be an attribute value literal unless SHORTTAG YES is specified
<div id="apDiv19"><img src="Images/ivory2.jpg" width="894" height="719" border=3/></div>
ERROR
required attribute "alt" not specified
<div id="apDiv24"><img src="Images/header.jpg" width="1100" height="310" border=1 /></div>
ERROR
document type does not allow element "link" here
<div id="apDiv35"><img src="Images/colorpalette1.jpg" width="490" height="328" /></div>

<div id="apDiv19"><img src="Images/ivory2.jpg" width="894" height="719" border=3/></div>
should be

<div id="apDiv19"><img src="Images/ivory2.jpg" width="894" height="719" border=3 /></div>

<div id="apDiv24"><img src="Images/header.jpg" width="1100" height="310" border=1 /></div>

to be wc3 valid, all images should have an alt tag like

<div id="apDiv24"><img src="Images/header.jpg" alt="This is the header Image" width="1100" height="310" border=1 /></div>

this is in case the image does not display, there is still text.

the third one cannot be solved with the code you have shown. you most likely have incorrectly nested an element somewhere in your html.

Thanks for the help what would you need to assist me in solving the 3rd case? Thanks

Um, I think the problem is the missing quotes here:

<div id="apDiv24"><img src="Images/header.jpg" width="1100" height="310" border=1 /></div>

which should be:

<div id="apDiv24"><img src="Images/header.jpg" width="1100" height="310" border="1" /></div>

and the same for the other line of code.

Need to see your full html for the other error.

Here is the code. Thanks

Hi- Thanks for your help. I am new to this and trying to figure out exactly what I needed to change. I tried adding the quotes around the border # and then tried the space as mentioned previously and it didn't work. Yours seemed to work and I am trying to see exactly what I did wrong. I have more pages that gave same errors and I would like to correct them as well once I know my mistakes. Thanks again I appreciate the help.

DanInMa

just run themn through the validator and more often than not it will highlight the exact problem area for you

xxnonamexx
07-17-2011, 04:30 PM
I did but the messages it gave was hard to understand what I need to do to correct it. I am new to this but tried to understand my mistakes and it wasn't so easy to understand what I did wrong. Again only ie9 was the issue other browsers worked fine. I am trying to find out what I did wrong so I can learn from the mistakes to correct the other pages giving the same error messages. Thank you

The <link...> should be in the head of the document, not the body.

xxnonamexx
07-17-2011, 08:53 PM
So by moving the <link> code into the head instead of body should correct errors? I tried it and when I went to view it "live" things were out of place. This is what Validator gives as the errors I just don't understand exactly what they are saying as far as correction to make it pass validator especially for ie9. Thanks

Line 218, Column 81: document type does not allow element "link" here
…iv id="apDiv14"><link rel="stylesheet" href="mbcsmb73g0.css" type="text/css" />

The element named above was found in a context where it is not allowed. This could mean that you have incorrectly nested elements -- such as a "style" element in the "body" section instead of inside "head" -- or two elements that overlap (which is not allowed).

One common cause for this error is the use of XHTML syntax in HTML documents. Due to HTML's rules of implicitly closed elements, this error can create cascading effects. For instance, using XHTML's "self-closing" tags for "meta" and "link" in the "head" section of a HTML document may cause the parser to infer the end of the "head" section and the beginning of the "body" section (where "link" and "meta" are not allowed; hence the reported error).

Line 230, Column 72: required attribute "alt" not specified
<p><img src="Images/ivory2.jpg" width="896" height="344" border="3" /></p>

The attribute given above is required for an element that you've used, but you have omitted it. For instance, in most HTML and XHTML document types the "type" attribute is required on the "script" element and the "alt" attribute is required for the "img" element.

Typical values for type are type="text/css" for <style> and type="text/javascript" for <script>.

Line 233, Column 81: an attribute value specification must be an attribute value literal unless SHORTTAG YES is specified

Again I appreciate all of your help.

This is still frustrating but I am missing something.
I tried my second page and moved the <link> to the head instead of body and closed it with <head> and still errors in validator.
I tried to follow the steps the previous member did to see if I can do it myself and ie9 still won't accept it. What am I missing? Thanks

also can you go back and edit all your posts and either highlight all your code and click the # button or type before it [C ODE] and after it [/ CODE] *be sure to omit the spaces* it makes it a lot easier to read... and scroll

I don't think I am following correctly. Here is the original code. I am not understanding what I need to do in order to make it acceptable in IE9. I tried to look at what changes you made and placed it into my original code to test in IE9 and same result. It doesn't display correctly. This is happening on all the pages I have created for this website.
<head> From what I gather this needs to be closed with a <head> at the end of the css? Sorry I just get so lost I don't understand what IE9 cannot read that all other browsers can.

i meant ie as in "that is to say" not ie as in internet explorer... bad choice on my part considering the title of thread... but i was further defining what Sammy had said in case you missed it :D... now all your code is gone... the code tags worked (thank you :) ) but you chopped off almost all of it-- can't see anything past the first few lines now... also in regards to your comment, no, <head> tags do not close with a <head> tag... they close with a </head> tag... this was possibly? one of the problems before... can you go back and (no need to delete/repost) copy/paste your code within the [C ODE] and [/C ODE] tags so we can checck it out again? also i would suggest clearing your cache since you seem to have been doing a lot of "little tweaks" and then reloading again and again.

Hi I reloaded the full code. Sorry about that.

ok... what exactly are you trying to do here? do you have a live link? i just copy/pasted code to .html and viewed in IE and chrome and it is a... well... idk.... anyways, i noticed all the pics seem to be used as background pics... is that correct? the "loaded" page seems to have a header areas, a nav bar (in the middle of the screen) and then a "content" area... you can do all of this without using position:absolute||relative; and i think that is why everything is going nuts... can you explain what it is supposed to look like?

xxnonamexx

I attached what it should look like taken in ie8. IE9 shows the menu on top of the page the ivory background image under the menu and then the text on the bottom.

you do not need to use position:absolute||relative; here... i think this is causing you a lot of hassle... check out this quick demo

replace the background colors with your images (there is a background-image property)... you are positioning (from what I can tell) to use images as backgrounds... you do not need to do this- you can set the background to be an image. Also you will need to modify the sizes of everything- i picked numbers off top of my head

xxnonamexx

Remember I am fairly new to this and I am trying to figure out what you did to my code to help me understand what I did wrong.
I noticed you eliminated the position:absolute; fields. I just don't understand how you tried it in IE9 and it works but I had a few different people try it on IE9 and its all out of wack.

alykins
07-19-2011, 04:55 PM
no problem being new- i am simply stating that you do not need any positioning here... there is an attribute background-image:url('path/of/image.ext'); that you can use instead... you are setting up your page using positioning and this should not be done... also since the only reason you are using positioning is to use an image as a background yo really don't need it... i didn't do anything with your code other than copy/paste/save/load it to see what was going on (in the first place) i made that little "demo" after you posted a picture of what you were trying to accomplish...
what is going on in the code
so some things that might be "not-so-clear" are:
*{margin:0px; padding:0px;}
this sets the default margin/padding to be 0... browsers can apply their "own" margin/padding and this removes it... the * signifies a universal rule (or global idk correct "wording")
margin:0px auto;
this is a trick to center divs spacially across the x axis. the margin attribute is as follows margin:top right bottom left; (around the world clockwise) doing the short hand of margin:0px auto; actually sets up margin:0px auto 0px auto; so you can think of the short hand margin as margin: top/bottom right/left; there is also a margin:one two three; but I cannot remember how this allocates as I never use it.
background just notates as background property... you can also see background-color background-image... it is a shorthand for all background properties (i do not remember the order; w3.org reference can clarify (or w3schools) )
i do not know if there is anything else unclear here- let me know if there is something with the code you do not get... play with this demo and apply background images to it... after playing with it apply the same ideas to your page

Thanks I will try the demo and add my images and see what results from it. Thanks again I appreciate all the help.

I use Dreamweaver since it is helpful. I eliminated the absolute||relative. I tested in IE9 and it works. Can you do me a favor just to confirm if you test it in IE9 to see if its the same as in the image in the previous post. The background colors with my images I already have a field background-image:url('path/of/image.ext') in the original code so I do not know what I should eliminate from my code?

i assume you posted wrong code? the code (copy/paste/viewed) looks the same as before and perusing through i see a lot of position:absolute||relative; still

xxnonamexx
07-20-2011, 04:15 PM
That may be very possible. I will have to check later. I know I deleted a few position:absolute fields. and tested in IE9 and it displayed correctly. I will repost the new "test" code later with these fields missing. I believe I removed apdiv fields 1-17,. Can you explain if these are more of these apdiv position:absolute fields that I can remove? The reason I ask is last night I removed a few and noticed it removed the background image and the alignment was off. Then I removed 1-17 I believe and it looked fine in IE9 I just want to get a better understanding of what is absolutely needed as far as apdiv position:absolute fields.
The background colors with my images I already have a field background-image:url('path/of/image.ext') in the original code so I left that field alone which got me confused when you asked to change the background color fields to the image.
You also mentioned I used positioning for my webpage what should I be doing to make it easier? Thanks

xxnonamexx

Here is the updated code I removed the apdiv position:absolute fields by trial and error and I think it works in IE9 now I just have to do the other bunch of pages. Can you just verify I feel better with a second set of eyes. Thanks for all of your help so far

<p><strong><em>At Philip Salon we take every measure possible for the safety of our staff and clientele. Our Keratin treatments are performed inside a separate well ventilated room.</em></strong><br />

Often called Brazilian blowouts, these keratin hair treatments originated in Brazil and made their way to U.S. salons about five years ago.&nbsp; The treatment infuses the hair with keratin, the same protein in hair, but the keratin is suspended in a chemical solution. After applying the product, a stylist straightens the hair with a flat iron, locking in the style and smoothing the hair molecules.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Do you have unmanageable, frizzy, damaged, takes forever to blowdry, doesn't hold hair color hair? &nbsp; Then you NEED this! This is not a straigtener, but more or less a service to offer you beautiful, manageable, shinier, healthier hair. &nbsp; It is almost like a miracle drug that helps take the frizz and curls out of your hair for up to 5 months! The&nbsp;Keratin Treatment with Juvexin&nbsp;is formulated to straighten the hair and leave it shiny, silky and manageable. This Keratin Treatment&nbsp;is specifically formulated as a revitalizing and rejuvenating treatment that eliminates frizz and curls (similar to the Brazilian Treatment).&nbsp; What is Juvexin you ask? &nbsp; It is a naturally derived protein similar to the structure of hair, which bonds to the surface and penetrates strands.</p>

I think I have it working correctly. Can anyone please double check how it works in IE9. Can someone also look at my code to see if there is anything that can be simplified as far as positioning etc?
Thanks I appreciate it.
