Sprites vs Java Onload

Hey guys,

Should I use sprite images or just onload them with java. For a hover link, I don't want that flicker between the two images. What are the pros/cons of both of them?

Sprites have the advantage of only having one HTTP request. As for the vast majority of connections the HTTP request is the slowest part of a download, you should probably go for sprites. Not to mention that you could put a lot of your site's smaller images in there. Many larger companies, such as Google, use sprites to reduce their server load.
