Morgoth 07-10-2003, 06:43 PM I don't remember seening these a few days ago... They new?
George, I hope your getting money or something from this...
I don't mind ads; I really think, since this forum is free, that everyone else shouldn't mind the ads either.
The only ad type I would protest against is popups, unless they are controlled... Example: no popups with inside of a forum, meaning, when you open up threds...
Think they came on around noon.
Sad they are ugly, the text sometimes runs right until the cel-border and the links open in the same window ...
whackaxe 07-10-2003, 08:22 PM i found a nice php encoder earlier from those ads :D
Morgoth 07-10-2003, 09:02 PM encoder?
Well then, you must be the only person on the internet to be affacted by banner ads.
pardicity3 07-10-2003, 09:06 PM I must say, if this forum is going to have ads (don't see how it ever survived with out 'em) then these are the kind I want. No crazy images with laser toting monkeys, just text. Best of all, they are completley relevant to the forum. Obviously it would be nice if they were costumizable so they didn't stick out so much...but I think sticking out is the point :).
Add one user to the "fully understanding and supporting the adds" list!
Oh, and I saw them around 11:00 US Central time.
Just after posting about how relative I thought these adds were to the forum, I saw an add for the Red Cross and Peace Corps. Now I totally support these groups, but I just thought it was a little funny, if not odd.
allida77 07-10-2003, 09:08 PM I think ads rock! I was really hoping for those entertaining Orbitz ads.
pardicity3 07-10-2003, 09:13 PM After a little bit of serching (10-20 seconds :)) I found this google site that I am pretty sure explains exactly what we are seeing:
https://www.google.com/adsense/
allida77 07-10-2003, 09:22 PM Thats pretty cool. I guess the new cf motto shoud be :
Thou shall clicketh on thy google ads when thy leaveth codingforums.com
I wonder how good the "relevant ads" will be.
Morgoth 07-10-2003, 09:43 PM Well, people advertise to sell stuff, I don't know how relevant they are to poor people like me...
Thanks for the support. The Google ads probably are temporary as I come up with a format for direct advertising on CF. I signed up with Google yesterday simply as a spur of the moment thing, since I've seen how targeted the ads can be, and can actually serve as useful resource links.
I've resisted putting advertising on CF for the longest time, but I think in order to make CF grow, it needs to pay its own way at least. I have a couple of ideas of expanding the site such as creating a tutorials section that anyone can contribute to, which will require additional hosting etc.

Tutorials section, that'd be cool.
Of course so are getting t shirts. :p They'd help advertise too. What's been the hold up? :)

bradyj 07-10-2003, 11:46 PM Hey, I offered free design, and cheap mass printing, but I didn't hear any feedback from the powers that be... :D
theabyss 07-10-2003, 11:50 PM Those are the best ads on the Internet! I love them because they don't get in the way like those flashing ads. Right click > Block Images from this Server :D
Morgoth 07-11-2003, 03:27 AM T-shirts?
Man, it's like yelling, "I'm a Geek!" in the middle of a mall.
The t-shirts better be writen in "1337" so no one but other geeks may know that your a bigger geek then them...
*sigh*
Dodged the bullet on that one, but.... for how long...?
Either way, I think ads will allow George to have the site pay for itself, and if we are to ad any tutorial pages to the forum, I think it should be connected to this forum's Database... One account, and easier on the admins.
I am applying for a job as a moderator of the tutorial section. :) (I lost at the 1999-2000 election, I wont lose at this...)
I'm a geek!
whackaxe 07-11-2003, 11:16 AM reminds me of something i once read:
"there are 10 types of people, those who know binary, and those who don't" :D
will the tutorials have to be written by people here?

I am sure you will need an account for something to submit code. I know I am going to submit my Members Online TimeOut Script ;)

SDP2006 07-21-2003, 05:33 PM T-shirts?
Man, it's like yelling, "I'm a Geek!" in the middle of a mall.
"What you do does not symbolize who you are"

Depends if you act like a geek...
scroots 07-21-2003, 07:19 PM polo shirts could be an improvement on T-shirts as they are smarter so you could where the to IT related meetings.

bradyj 07-21-2003, 10:08 PM Pardon my comment, but I'd rather go with a t-shirt than go yuppie with a polo -- god forbid I fit that stereotype and part ways from the computer to the Abercrombie store:D

To some of us, the polo shirt itself screams "I am a geek" even without the advertising.
scroots 07-21-2003, 10:55 PM sorry it was just a suggestion.

bradyj 07-21-2003, 11:35 PM sorry scroots, I wasn't meaning to slam it too hard -- it would be easier to pull off at work with the polo, though.
scroots 07-21-2003, 11:55 PM bradyj its not you (nor anyone on this board), its just everything i have said (mainly on msn) on the net has just annoyed someone it must just be the nite.
so i just thought it must be happening here too.
obviously it isn't.

scroots 07-26-2003, 02:53 PM Opera status bar bug, if you mousover part of hte add it places a message in the status bar (fair enough) the when you move away it stays in the status bar, you mousover other links the status bar message changes and then it changes back to what it says like when your over the advert when you are halfway down the page.
So my status bar says go to xmlspy.com when i'm not over the banner advert.

World-Craft 07-28-2003, 06:17 PM I'm already widely known as a 'geek'. When I was swordfighting in the mall with swords for looks, not for fighting, and broke one...
oh yeah, back on topic (: I think they are great, good ads. I'm going to sign up for em (:
I've already found a few links that I've clicked (:
