which language ?

hi, i want to take a course on either PHP or ASP. can you professionals help me wich one to chose?
i want the strong one and also populare for taking a job.

ASP requires a lot of Microsoft software (and money) and whereever you go you'll rely on that stuff being installed. A lot of businesses will go with ASP though because they prefer M$ as a brand and think its the best way to go forward - the murky underworld of open source and linux isn't something they understand and so they prefer to stay in their comfort zone.

PHP on the other hand is completely free and is pretty easy to get going on windows and is pretty much native on *nix servers. There is plenty of support and for smaller businesses they'll often use a php powered site to save on costs.

It's really down to you which of these scenarios you think will help you the most. You could always bite the bullet and learn both ;)

Why choose? A languages is merely a tool. Programming itself never changes.
Learn both languages. PHP will net more freelance and plenty of typical jobs, but ASP will land you more enterprise level positions (for which you might as well learn how to use things like sharepoint and SQLServer as well).
Assuming you mean ASP.NET as well and not standard ASP, you will be required to learn another .NET language as well. C# is almost the same as Java, so that would kill three languages right off the bat.

I myself do not program at all in ASP, but I would assume learning it would be a piece of cake. I honestly don't know how ASP and ASP.NET actually became so popular.

Agreed. ASP is a little out dated now and if wanted to do new development in it, you really should use ASP.NET instead. However I'm sure there are lots of companies with lots of internal and external web apps written in ASP so it can be good to know still.

And you are right it is pretty easy to learn, ASP (Classic) is basically just visual basic. Which is probably one of the reasons it became so popular, it was really easy to program in.

If you have to pay for something to learn from the start, I'd suggest ASP.

PHP is relatively easy to pick up if you have experience in other languages. It's easy to write PHP but difficult to write good PHP.

Once you've got the basics in check (and you'll fly through it if you have a reasonable understanding of the logic that PHP applies..), it'd be a good idea to pay for a PHP Advanced course to learn more of the complex stuff (like objects for example).

I have completed both of them, and lean a little bit towards ASP.NET. In my view it encourages programmers to create better code, by separating code from UI (with code-behind). You can also write the code in C# (which is very similar to C++ but helps you from pointer problems) and the experience of using C# can make it easy if you want to write C# applications for Windows.

That said, PHP is very popular and if you would be interested in part-time work, there seem to be more part-time telecommute opportunities available to develop websites using PHP then there are for ASP.NET and J2EE. You could always learn ASP.NET first and then learn PHP later, since PHP is pretty easy to learn.

As an IT recruiter of many years, and the owner of a job-board (MinnesotaTechJobs)...I can say I have a pretty good feel for the pulse. I have not seen a lot of companies asking for ASP, but there are many asking for PHP.

So, if you optons are PHP or ASP...I would say PHP.

Of course, later you said you meant C#.Net. Then I would start with C#.Net. There is still a lot of demand for C#.Net...and it is more difficult to pick up than PHP. It would be ideal to pick up both, but for a paid class - I recommend C#.Net first.

ASP is a dying beast C# however is another story.
Generally you should learn OOP approach and you will be fine with any language.

PHP and Yii works good as well as C# I'm good with both but if you want a high paying job go for C# + ASP.NET

PHP is pretty good, but it would set a foundation for many other future languages you'll need to learn eventually so that you can be as marketable as possible.

The other thing you can try is to get general overview, if there is something I like to find out in terms of education and personal grows I use Khan Academy (http://www.khanacademy.org/) just type in the search "programming" and watch some videos very cool and free =)

I think you should go for PHP it is easy to pick up more than other languages. It's easy to write PHP but u need to do more practice to write good PHP. But first of all make your interest for it .
