EEk I have been editing title tags for someone and have managed to overwrite their template.php in application/classes/controller/ of Kohona - does anyone know how to help restore it please?? I made a backup but it is corrupted... very sad & immensely stressed out now...

If the software comes with an installer, PHP's clear text interpretation will allow you to extract the file from the installer. Not sure why you are performing modifications on a production machine though.
Also, in the future choose a more suitable (and less... vocal) title for your threads.

Agreed, NEVER edit the live site, only overwrite it with approved changes.
I always utilize three separate environments during development: dev, staging, and live.
The client never sees the dev environment. When dev is ready for client review, push it to staging where the client can view and approve. If any changes are needed, do them in dev and push to staging for further client review. Throughout this whole process, live is never even touched.
When the client approves staging, back up live and push staging to live.
So staging and live are NEVER edited, only overwritten.
I know this doesn't help your current situation... honestly, little can be done. But hopefully it will help in future projects! ;)
If this is a client you've taken on temporarily... always back up EVERYTHING to your local machine before doing any work. I'd just create a local folder named after the site's domain, and literally drag down the root public folder.
