View Full Version : Pulling .NET Dynamic Data by First Letter only

Hi everyone,

I have a long list of dynamic data being generated on a jquery mobile site. I'd like to have this data be separated by alphabet list bars, much like the directory organization of a phone by first letter. (ex: jQuery Mobile: Demos and Documentation)

Another option would simply be to only call the data by first letter. For example, I select the letter "A", and all the data that starts with "A" displays.

I am calling names via ASP.NET.vb repeated method with: <%# Eval("Name")%>

That code of course pulls all names. How can I narrow it down to specific letter starts? I am new to ASP and ASP.NET; therefore, I'm not quite sure where to start or what terminology to start researching. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Hey creativeedg10,

I'm not quite sure I understand 100%. Are you saying you have some data and you want to have 26 links A-Z, which filter that data? Kind of like pagination?

Where is the data coming from? If it's coming from a database, just pass the letter parameter and filter it on the database level. Otherwise, you can also filter it either on your page's server or client side. So, which is the case?

Hi Mike,

Sorry I missed your post here from a while back.

Essentially, yes, I will be listing 26 links A to Z. When you click on the letter list item, it highlights data that starts with that letter.

I am using ASP.NET and Microsoft SQL. I was just informed that Ajax is wanted to call in the data specifically being asked. So now, I think the dynamics changed a bit, so I'm currently researching this.

Any insight on the Ajax method of calling data content in an A-Z list format?

In summary, we want to call specific data when we want it. We don't want to use 26 queries for each letter on one page. That's too much information for one page.

Thank you for your time and help,
