HI, I'm trying to keep my web code as clean as possible with minimum use of images etc.
I was hoping there was a way to create some effects on a background colour, using css, such as to apply some light to the colour so that it doesn't look as flat.

There is a CSS3 way to apply background gradients but be aware that it’s not valid according to current standards (since it’s not a standard yet and implementations are different in different browsers) and implementation in IE requires a special HTC file and could be kind of tricky with hasLayout and z-index issues.
But anyway, here’s a gradient generator (http://gradients.glrzad.com/) and the CSS3pie (http://css3pie.com/) HTC stuff for IE.

thanks for that.
No point in applying something that is not currently valid.
I take it the other option is to embedd images as backgrounds. I wondered if there were websites out there where you can download and use pre designed graphics as images and use them in my websites.
I am trying to stear clear of paying for programmes such a serif drawplus or photoshop. Basically i'm not particularly strong on graphics so it would help if I could pick stuff 'off the shelf' to use in my sites.
any links/advice appreciated.

I can’t recommend any specific site but search the internet for “website templates” or “themes”. You’ll probably find something you like. But watch out for suspicious offers, e. g. hidden links or keywords (spam) in the downloaded themes.
