This is my way:
Make sure you have a layer that is white (or wahtever color you want) behind your picture layer. Click on your picture layer and then click the little icon that makes a layer mask. Select black as your color.
Now change to the rectangle marquee tool (aka the box selection tool). Make a selection around the part of the image you want to keep. Now press ctrl+shift+I to invert the selection (that is on a PC, not sure the command on an apple...). Go to your selection menu and choose feather. Enter in something like 10px to start with. Now press shift+backspace (once again...on a PC) to fill that selection with black.
Now the results may not be perfect, and if you don't like them you can always undo the fill and mess around some more with the feather :)
The black color that you are painting into the mask is "erasing" the picture. The good thing about a mask is that if you make a mistake you can just erase the black color in the mask (or delete the mask completely) and your original picture will be back to normal.
Alternativley...you could just not do a selection and instead paint onto the mask layer with a large airbrush, but that would be less precise in your case.
thanks...i will try it when i get home..thanks for your reply again!
