Member’s area help

Hello all, I am new to the forums, so if I seam a little bit dumb I apologise.

Over the past few weeks I have been developing a website, I have decided that a members area is needed. I have been trying to use a PHP / MYSQL combination to archive this. I have tried downloading pretty much every script of www.hotscripts.com to try and make it work, but for some reason I have not been able to make any work.

I have a forum set-up on my website using MYSQL, so I know that everything is working, and that I am capable of making it work. But recreantly any scripts I have tried does not work. I sent an E-mail off to my web host and they told me that they would recommend using PHP3 script, but I do not know what the difference is. I also believe that my provider does not support PHP version 4, so I am wondering if this has something to do with it.

Could someone provide me with a website that will tell me where I am going wrong, or any free scripts I can download that I can try and make work, as I said earlier I am not very good with all of this so please excuse my ignorance… but hey we all have to start some where.

If your host is still using php v.3 then i would find a new host. lol anyways just to make sure create a php file and and name it something like test.php and put this in it:

<?php
phpinfo();
?>

This will give you a bunch of info about what php version your host has installed.

Once we determine what your host has we can better help you.

If your host still runs PHP3 and refuses to upgrade, definitely ditch them. With PHP5 ante portas they lag way behind.
You won't find plenty of recently active PHP projects designed to work explicitly also with PHP3 nowadays, I'm afraid.

Plus, it can mean that they don't care at all about newer versions of other software, but that's just a speculative assumption.

Hm. That's hard to answer, because just from your post it's tough to determine how skilled you are in PHP at all. I think it's beginner but that can mean a lot - programming experience in other languages is definitely helpful, just for instance.
I would recommend that you try to think of a simple script and then you start writing it. There a legion of tutorials plus a very good manual floating around in the web, so you won't have to search very long for a quick start.

And the people in this forum are also here to help you out with coding issues. ;)

I sent another e-mail to my webhost yesterday and they told me that they do now support php v 4, but i have to add some info to a .htacsess file.

They also had my DB name, and User name set to the wrong account, no wonder i could no connect.

I have some basic scripts working now and i think i can plod threw, thanks for your help anyway
