New Chrome Looks

Does anyone know how to make these new "chromium" looking designs that some various sites are going to now?

Yeah, the gradients. Sorry! I'm not a graphics expert :)

they are just gradients. or e-plastic maybe. they are basicly gradients that have had bump map or lighting filters run on them. i am the real king of chrome (if anyone seen my avatar anywhere else, youll agree:D)

ps...That is OS X...I need it for OS 9.2 Bet it is not available for OS 9 because it is Unix based :(

It's really not that complex to create, it just takes looking at the image and trying to figure out how to 'build it'. All of them are buttons with a gradient running through it (usually a white at top and bottom and a blue in the middle). Then another layer is a white highlight that was painted on top to look bubbly, and the opacity was brought down to blend it. Then, between both layers, type in text and mess with the opacity with that.

In Photoshop, you can also double click the layer with the button and 'apply' the bevel and emboss option. Play with what bevel you would like to use, and (here's how Apple makes their X look aqua) where you can select the colors at the bottom, change them both to white and to screen opacity. Now play with how it blends, how big the bevel is, etc. That's a quick and easy way to do it. Does that make sense?

my fav (real)chrome procedure is this.

-get selection
-transfer selection to channel and gaussian blur to adapt to needs
-fill selection(on layer) with a white to gray(NOT black)
-bump map the selection with the gradient using the channel
-blur it all to make it smooth
-<magic_part>open the curves dialogue and play with the curves. the best is to make a sine instead of he straight diagonal default. this is the most important step</magic_part>
