this is quite strange. i have 2 files:

hello.php4

#!/usr/local/bin/php4
<?php include 'accesscontrol.php4'; ?>
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C/DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head>
<title> Members-Only Page </title>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type"
content="text/html"; charset=iso-8859-1>
</head>
<body>
<p>Hi, <?=$username?>! You have entered a members-only area
of the site. Don't you feel special?</p>
</body>
</html>

accesscontrol.php4

#!/usr/local/bin/php4
<?php
session_start();
$uid = isset($_POST['uid']) ? $_POST['uid'] : $_SESSION['uid'];
$pwd = isset($_POST['pwd']) ? $_POST['pwd'] : $_SESSION['pwd'];

if(!isset($uid)) {
?>
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C/DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">

</body>
</html>
<?php
exit;
}

$_SESSION['uid'] = $uid;
$_SESSION['pwd'] = $pwd;

dbConnect("sessions");
$sql = "SELECT * FROM user WHERE
userid = '$uid' AND password = PASSWORD('$pwd')";
$result = mysql_query($sql);
if (!$result) {

'contact you@example.com.');
}

if (mysql_num_rows($result) == 0) {
unset($_SESSION['uid']);
unset($_SESSION['pwd']);
?>

</body>
</html>
<?php
exit;
}
?>

i am trying to run the hello page. at random times i would get the following error:

500 Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
...
Error: HTTPd: malformed header from script /cgi/hello.php4
and it really seems to be random. for example, i close the browser window. open it again, access the page get the above error. refresh and suddenly get the actual login screen.
i have no idea if it's php, a server or what else, 'cause i absolitely cannot spot what's wrong.

p.s. let's leave the question of having a password in teh actual file alone for this matter.
