View Full Version : JavaScript Date Sorting Problem

I am trying to use JavaScript in conjuntion with html to display a table of sortable cities, states and dates. The dates are my problem. I am a novice and was given this code. But it seems to sort in European style, yyyy/mm/dd. I need it to sort mm/dd/yyy, which i am told is US style. Any help on this, I would be most grateful for.

I have placed a page here (http://www.igwtamerica.org/CA/CA_YesCitiesListSortCodeTestCF.php) to let you see the code at work. This page has the code on it in text also. I do not mind posting the code hgere also if you prefer.

Thanks for any help you may be willing to offer me with this.

This must be more difficult than I thought! Here's the code:

var europeandate = false;

if (europeandate == true) {
dt = yr+date.substr(3,2)+date.substr(0,2);
return dt;
} else {
dt = yr+date.substr(0,2)+date.substr(3,2);
return dt;
}

The script appears to have allowed for that.

Thank you so much for your reply! And I know this is goint to sound stupid, but I am a real novice and have been humbled before. Your above code fragment...do you supose this will fix my problem if I replace the original code with it? I will proceed this direction and look back for your answer and let you know what happened. Thanks again, Preston

Philip, I tried it and it is close, I think. I think I'm the most confusing part of this puzzle. I'm probably phrasing the question wrong. What I need in code is, the year evaluated first, but of course in US, it will be displayed last(far right). Then evalute the month and display it far left.. Then evaluate day and display it between month and year. So in display, a date of October 21,1957 would appear 10/21/1957. Thanks for your patience in this. I do have a page with the table and code on it here, [URL="http://www.igwtamerica.org/CA/CA_YesCitiesListSortCodeTestCF.php"[/URL] if it might help. Thanks very much! Preston

The code that I posted in post#3 was a snippet from the code you posted.

You can manipulate the date format

dt = yr+date.substr(0,2)+date.substr(3,2);

by re-arranging to

dt = date.substr(0,2)+date.substr(3,2) + yr;

but I do not know if it will work as I have no way of testing your code.

Likewise you can re-arrange

dt = date.substr(6,4)+date.substr(3,2)+date.substr(0,2);

which to me sounds like YYYY/MM/DD

Use some alerts to reveal what you are getting.
