Hi there,

I would really like some objective opinions on the design and functionality of my website, Etch The Web. It's my reasonably new web design company, I've been tweaking the design and layout incrementally over the last month or so and feel I'm finally quite happy with it.

Personally, while I'm aware it's not the kind of chunky, bold style which is currently fashionable, I think it has a certain appeal... but that's just me! :)

So yes, some opinions/suggestions would be lovely!

Thanks!

I like your site. Very clean and well laid out. The colors go well with the design theme and presents your site as professionally done. Functionality seems good as well.

One thing, and this is my own opinion, is the width on the content. I like to use a little more of the available real estate, but if that would require reworking your main image, then its not a biggie.

Great job I think!

I don't understand the purpose of the rusty hook. It pushes your actual content way down on the page and it's there for... ??? I dunno, I can't figure it out.

The two questions "what do you do?" and "who do you work with?" also seemed to be asking the visitor those questions. I'd change the questions to "what do I do?" and "who do I work with?"

Also:

So random. Has nothing to do with the page's content.

Thanks guys, appreciate the feedback.

As for the critique, I feel if either of those images were changed or the former modified the page wouldn't look half as good. It was a design choice I decided to go for and the page is definitely all the better for it. While the guy on the phone doesn't necessarily apply to the page, it's generic, and it's better than no image at all since let me tell you, if you come onto that page and just see a wall of text, you're much less likely to end up reading it. It's a common technique used in web design.

The "hook" as you put it, does exactly that, hooks the user and sets the colour palette for the rest of the page.

Thanks.

I'm sorry my point wasn't clear... I would prefer to see relevant graphics, not generic ones that have nothing to do with the content. I agree, a wall of text is boring. But generic images only whitewash the message you want to drive home, that you are a kickass web designer. How about some samples of your web design work scattered through the text, with captions that describe the work?

And p.s., it is unfortunately a very common technique to use pointless irrelevant graphics in websites. I spot them a mile away and it just screams "This website was created using a free template from css-templates.com and I didn't even change the graphics that came with the template!" Just cuz other people do it doesn't make it right :p

I agree with Fumigator. While you definitely don't want to just have a wall of text, you should spice it up with some relevant images. There's tons of free licensed stock photos that come across very Web 2.0. Just Google around until you find something you like.

In technical criticisms, however, your images are rather large (file size wise). The image takes a second or two to load. You may want to compress it a bit. If you've got Photoshop then I'd recommend you import it then click "Save for Web."

- minimize the size of http://www.etchtheweb.com/images/mainpageimg.gif because it increase the loading time.
- that fb like garbage, i would remove it, slow down the page, didn't increase trafic and is a nonsens. Anyway i would move w3 links far from it if you want to keep it.
- html 4.01 transitional? why not strict?
+ agree with what Fumigator said.

in general i like the site i think is well done

best regards
