View Full Version : opacity gradient in PS6

I've got 2 layers - a background color and a photograph, and I want to blend from left to right from one into the other - like you would with two colors and the gradient tool, but I want the gradient to the be the opacity of the photograph layer.
How can I do that?

This is how I would do that. Select Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Gradient Map. You can select whatever style of gradient you want to use from the drop down that appears. I would suggest just using the "default" to start with which is duotone white/gray/black. In the layers palete on the right side of your screen, with the new gradient layer selected, at the top there is a drop down that should read "normal" by default. At the very bottom of the list is Luminosity. Select that. Put your photo layer on top of the gradient layer and ajust the opacity of the two layer until you get the desired effect. The simply merge the layer. Hope that helps.

Or you could just put up a layer mask (click the little layer mask button by where the layers menu is) and then do a white to black horizontal gradient. The black area of the mask will be what actually hides the image.
My bad, I forgot to specify that the layer mask goes on the photograph layer.
Hope this helps!
