Help with SMTP email

We are finishing a project for a client. We found out they needed to use SMTP for sending mail rather than PHP(mail). The application we are working on is written in PHP. We are with HostMonster.com for testing the app. What are the steps and codes I need to take and use to get our forms working with SMTP? I have tried multiple examples online, but end up with a blank page.

Use PHPMailer (http://sourceforge.net/projects/phpmailer/files/phpmailer%20for%20php5_6/) and you will find that it will make your life a lot easier.
