JavaScript is purely a client-side language, and unless used with an Ajax call has no capability to read from or write to a file (except a cookie), communicate with the server, or access a database.

Do you mean Java? Java and Javascript are entirely different programming languages, in spite of the confusingly similar names.

All advice is supplied packaged by intellectual weight, and not by volume. Contents may settle slightly in transit.

I think you simply need to go read the documentation.

http://wiki.apache.org/couchdb/
http://wiki.apache.org/couchdb/Getting_started_with_JavaScript
and more.

Philip: couchdb is *inherently* an AJAX-based system. It was designed to be accessed completely via HTTP ("RESTful") and thus via AJAX (or SJAX). Fascinating concept.
