View Full Version : using AJAX or JS for a dynamic frame

I have plenty of information in my database now, and I'm thinking of making a double-frame style webpage that can pull content from the db. but the AJAX code I have is sometimes very slow. It might be my server though.

Could anyone shed some light on how the following website populates the right side frame with help content? http://vb.mvps.org/hardcore/

if you double click on the file on the left, the content immediately appears on the right. I'm guessing that it doesn't come from a database, because of pages like this: http://vb.mvps.org/hardcore/html/interfacetypelibraries.htm

that same content can be seen by one of those help chapters too. So, there's a complete file for the link. Could someone tell me how exactly this works?

That site is basicly a normal html paged website but they use a java applet to have a one page navigation, so the pages on the server are controlled by the applet so that when you click a file on the left the applet has code in it to tell the right frame what file to show, which my guess is dynamicly having the applet change the frames src file location.

so all of those pages are single files!? why do something like that when a db is available for storage?

are java applets even worth learning?

or can frames do most of the stuff that applets can do? I'm not a techy person, so the intricacies do not matter too much to me. I'm really interested in doing things as quickly as possible, with as little sacrifice as possible. :)

thanks for the advice too. didn't know that!

Not everyone knows databases but could know java, it is all down to what you know when building a site.

They server a lot of purposes on websites for things such as live chat rooms or support centers but many other codes these days can do the same and like I said before it's down to what you know.

It can be done with frames but I personaly don't like to use frames, I use AJAX and internal API's to do user interactions and animations on websites.
