Would anyone like to suggest a possible reason/s why my puter might suddenly decide to reboot itself usually when left unattended downloading stuff?

I thought of over-heating (it's set to shutdown at 70C but runs at less than 48C... but that's shutdown... not rebooting, too! I appear to have no viruses. I do have Nortons Systems Works 2002 which gets regularly updated, but cannot see any associated program in it that causes a reboot after doing some scheduled servicing or whatever.

I looked high and low through my Win98 SE display settings but have not seen anything there that might cause it.... again any there appear to cause shutdown of PC. It's the rebooting.. and accompanying scandisk.. that bothers me. :(

My son doesn't seem to think it's anyone nuking me although it did occur to me. I have reasonable firewall protection from my IP and not open to the troubles that Win95 used to suffer.

Would appreciate any tips or leads I might look at.

What is your hardware spec?

You may find that heat is the problem and it's restarting, because it's set to shut down, doesn't always mean that's what it does; my old Pentium 4 based system used to restart not shut down when it over heated.

Again on the hardware front the power supply can cause reboots, a power supply too weak for the system or on its last legs can cause this kind of behaviour.

Windows can also restart when a critical error occurs, however this is a Windows XP thing.

LOL What took you so long to answer, mouse?? :D

I will check the heating problem again... and also the power supply although I think its 350wtts in a new cabinet for an Athlon 1.2GB CPU running with 512MB DDR RAM

Thanks mate :)

2K also...

This can be changed as well in both OS's by one of two ways...

Right Click 'My Computer' --> Select Properties --> Advanced:

In the Startup and Recovery Section click Settings;
In the System Failur Section uncheck Automatically Restart...

Another way of accomplishing this is by way way of the Registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\CrashControl\; "AutoReboot"="0"

I know off topic, but just in case someone wanted to know...
