I have modified this website for my professor.

http://www.chem.umn.edu/groups/gagliardi/home.html

It works properly only in Chrome.I am having problems in mozilla and IE.

In mozilla :
1)the colors of the borders of the tables are lost (page:teaching, collaborations, funding ,contact, group seminars)
2) Empty table column cell's borders diappear(page:Group seminar).i.e last column.
3) Text of side table falls out

In IE:
1)Same problems as above
2)alignment of some text is disturbed ,like in group seminars page, the headings are shifted to left.
3)The Navigation bar shapes loose the roundness .

So please can you help in resolving this problem .
thank you

What's causing your problems is the lack of a valid doctype statement at the top of the page.

You havent uploaded your files with a valid doctype...do that now.

Also, your commenting is incorrect, which may be causing you quite a bit of trouble.

Here is a correct comment:

<!--Correct Comment -->

Notice there's only 2 dashed on either side of the comment text.

Try adding this doctype in place of just the <html> at the top of your page code:

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">

http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.chem.umn.edu%2Fgroups%2Fgagliardi%2Fhome.html&charset=%28detect+automatically%29&doctype=Inline&group=0

When I look at your source code I see many syntax errors and the validator detects them. Some of them may be causing trouble when you add the doctype, but you will never get the page to work correctly in all browsers without one. You are mixing old and new code and not using a doctype, that may throw the browser into quirks mode, with very reduced functionality. It's going to take quite a bit of work to replace all the old code with up to date, but you need to put a doctype on first.

thank this worked ...
But now there is one more issue .. the table borders loose their color.
In chrome you can see the table has golden yellow borders ,but in mozilla the color is gray
Can u help me with ,why this is happening so ?

Wow. Adding the doctype made everything disappear, and just fixing the comment tags made everything reappear.

Well ,just not the comments ,but also the syntax errors which are cozing problems .
So now I added doctype (only for the homepage and contact pages ,U can check)
also corrected syntax errors and teh comments too

But there is this issue still continuing :
When I view the contact page ,the middle table has a dark yellow border, but when viewed in mozilla ,it becomes grey '

Can you help me out with this ?

I dont know what you're talking about. IE 8 shows the table with a grey border. Firefox shows the table with a grey border, albeit a little heavier maybe, but still grey.

well Look at it in Chrome , the color of the border appears .. golden yellow.
And As you have raised the topic of IE ,did you observe that the homepage when viewed in IE ,does not display the content below the image ?
I have no idea why this is happening

Ok I see the border does appear to be yellowish....is this something that you should really stress out about? I mean its not a coding error, It will not cause your page to break and its only in Chrome that it happens, in which case it still looks fine.

The home page issue. I dont know WHAT content you're talking about. I see your image, with a bar image below it. Then I see your footer menu and below that is a counter and some information on page management.

Ye i know it looks fine though the color of table does not appear .So i guess I shouldn't bother much. But just wanted to know why it is was happening .

Secondly, first of all to ask you ,is the bar (below the image ),the counter and page management info visible for you ,while your viewing in IE?
In my case,I cannot see these 3 things while m trying to view it using IE.
So if you are able to view it in your IE,there should be some problem with my IE guess ,and not the code
