free chat?

What are the usual requirements for a chat program?

java is the main requirement for chatrooms, but java/jsp/etc hosting can be expensive

Can be applet-ized

Just a thought, check out mirc-x (http://www.mircx.com) for an example, you would have to download a client and kind of learn the program though.
