What was your major in college?

I'm not sure which major I should choose that would help me get a job in web development. I don't want to do web design (the aesthetic aspect), but I rather handle what goes on behind the scenes (the coding, database management, etc).

I was considering a major in computer science and a minor in mathematics. But I'm not sure if computer science is directly related to the work I would want to do. I don't want to build the hardware of computers.

I start registering for classes on Nov 18th so I have some time to think it over and research. But it seems like what I want to do falls under different ones. Some call it computer science, some call it computer programming, others call it software engineering. Not sure which path to take.

What was your major/minor in college?

i majored in Electrical Engineering... all i got out of it was a huge loan :D the trends now are more driven to COMPSCI... if you have this available take it (if you want to pursue coding)... a good many of our classes (in the later years) integrated with the COMPSCI's and where we had more understanding of "how it works" from a component view, they knew "how it works" from a code standpoint... and by "it" i mean logical devices (such as PIC's PLC's computers, etc)... jumping from that field into this one was not so bad- but i know that field is crashing (unless you pair with another major/minor)... again if you want to go into programming i would suggest COMPSCI- you will get more experience in coding but also learrn the ins-outs of "what you need to know" on computers

I majored in math, minored in computer science (back in the dark ages). Worked out ok for me. Since you know your interest is "real" programming, server stuff, database, etc, just look at the curriculum for those majors and see which one encompasses the type of content you want. Whether it's called Computer Science (probably), Computer Programming, or Software Engineering, just pick the one that has the software courses that make sense to you.

From the perspective of a minor, I would highly recommend something completely different, like business, art, marketing... it will likely be very helpful down the line to have some breadth in your background.

Even though this is a 9 month-old thread, I'll go ahead and give mine: Computer Information Systems (2 year degree). This means COBOL for business applications. B-O-R-I-N-G.... but has turned into a nice career. And I've been able to learn web development on the side as a hobby for enjoyment. Please tell me I'm enjoying my current freelance project.

Currently I am almost finished with a computer science degree (very tough major at a good school). I may spend a little extra time, to double major with Applied Math and minor in digital arts as well.

My roommate did information/technology systems management as a major. It is a very watered down version to put it. They need to take some of the classes we do but most of them were bs. Nothing past basic programming and it is really nothing big CS wouldn't cover, or you could learn easily on your own.

Go for CS, you learn so much valuable information. Not just programming, but algorithm design, theory of computation, in depth computer memory management, probability courses are usually required, etc. Good luck, it is difficult, but very worth it I think.

Well i am an accounting graduate, major in mathematics and english. So i am currently working at the bank as an auditor III. For you, as a computer science, i think that is more on computer database, hardwares, and programming. Why not taking an Information Technology?

I have almost 30 years in the industry. Yes, computer science with a minor in math will get you far in the corporate world. But seriously, if you are interested in building code related to websites and not living in a cubicle the rest of your days, just pick up PHP on your own and skip the degree. Ok, the degree is nice, but it's really just for you unless you are on the corporate route. I mean, I buy wordpress plugins all the time written in PHP, and I even have no idea who programs them. It only matters do they work. Programming in PHP is great, but mastering outsourcing and just coming up with ideas will get you further and make you richer. China, India, and the Phillipines have great PHP coders - you don't need to compete with them. They work so cheap - just hire them to do your work. You provide the ideas and direct their efforts. Computer Science is key, but if you want to get into the design aspect, some type of art degree is a necessity.
I have a major in art, a minor in comp sci, and numerous AAS degrees to go with it. Most of my coding education is in the form of online tutorials.
