I don't like the checkered background. It camouflages some of my drawing. How can I make it solid?

Within Photoshop:
Edit->Preferences->Transparency & Gamut

Here you set the colours used for the transparent background. If you want a solid colour choose "Grid Colours : Custom" and then set both colours to the same colour.

I'd have to see the image to help you but usually you can just select the background with the magic wand tool and go to edit > fill > - then select whether you want the foreground color or background color as your fill color and hit okay. That will fill your selected area with the color that you have chosen.
