I one would really want to get a portable mac, and didn't want to spend too much money on it, there are two choices: a 12" PowerBook with a 867MHz G4 or a 14" iBook with a 900MHz G3, the iBook being only slightly cheaper with the modifications I want. So, how much difference does a G4 make on a G3? Is it worth it if the other components are virtually the same? Are there any forward compatibility issues that you might consider? Is now the right time to buy it or should you wait for OSX 10.3?

I'm also considering getting a Mac just to test out development work. Gone through eBay and combed through the listings, though in the end I think it just makes sense to get an affordable but new one.

The one I have my eye on are the entry level eMacs, which come with eternet installed (cable internet): http://store.apple.com/ ($799 and up).

I have a G-4 MAC. Not an Ibook but have seen and used a G-3 and I would say it would be worth it to get the G-4. Faster by far. My "mentor" is a Senior Graphics Designer and has been for 15 years and she has a G-4 at home and at work. Traded her G-3's for them. She just does design and layout though. No "geek work" as she calls it(coding). She uses MAC OS 10.2 on both and likes them very much. The place she works for has a G-4 Titanium powerbook that the office "shares" and it is pretty cool too.

Depends on your needs - if you only want to for development and have no intention of using it much beyond that, then a G3 will do you fine. But if you want it to be a workhorse, then you're bound to want more power.

Aside from possibly using x86 emulation for ie6w, it won't need to be a "workhorse". I mostly want it since I don't feel like taking my desktop pc and 21" screen with me over the summer as I will be moving around a bit. However, I'm considering going computer-less over the summer as well.

It'll be tough, but I have made it in the past.:D
