Hello,
For almost a year now i have a problem accessing some of the files on my PC. I'm running windows XP, v5.1 sp3.

So windows explorer shuts down with an error message when i access certain files in the "My Documents" folders. Its movie files i got from the pirate bay with funny file names.
Example file name might be movies\TopGun-[1988][www.website.com].avi

Now windows xp does not seem to like these file names. I can open the folder, but as soon as i click the file name, windows explorer wants to shut down with an error. Because of this, i can't even click the files to rename the files to something better.

My question;
Can i use windows start, run menu to run some other program other than "Windows explorer" that will allow me to rename the files and take out the internet address's from the file names?

I'm not good with PC jargon so go easy on me. I'm not fimilar with windows/start/run commands stuff. Or dos prompt.

Thanks for any help anyone can offer.
John.

Does it happen with *.avi files that have "clean" names? It could be the codec you have installed is causing explorer to crash when it tries to get a thumbnail of the movie.

I'm finding it difficult to isolate the exact cause so i cannot say for sure. But i created a new folder that contains 8 .avi files and one .txt file. The fault transfered once i created the folder. I can open this new folder, and i can click on the .txt file, and i can open the .txt file. But as soon as i click the file name of the .avi files, explorer wants to shut down.

In other places on my PC i have .avi files with normal names and they play just fine!. So although i cannot be sure, i'm guessing that re-naming the files might fix the problem. How can i do this?

Thanks OracleGuy,
John.

Its ok, i got it fixed!

Windows explorer uses a thing called libavcodec.dll to display thumbnail images. This was causing the problem. I found a way to disable it here; http://forum.videohelp.com/threads/294106-Problem-with-libavcodec-dll?p=2021366

Problem solved, thanks guys,
John.
