I've been using iptc to add metadata notes to files for a quite a while now....
What I want to know is there a way to add this type of metadata to any type of file..... I am not interested in notes that are not embedded, I need it as embedded metadata that stays with the file no matter where it's taken.
What would be ideal is to know a "safe way" to add metadata to a file manually that would not be overwitten using a binary capable editor such as VIM

OS: Ubuntu 10.04
