Enlarge image without changing format?

Unclear I'm sure. I want to mouseover an thumbnail image that'll display its full size verion over the existing html code. Right now I have the thumbnail in table. But when I mouseover, it expands its cell and throws the rest of the page off. Does this make any sense to anyone? :( I hope so.
