I had version 3.6.6 installed when it was a current version and when the upgrade to 3.6.8 came along, I had to uninstall FF and then d/l 2.6.8 from mozilla's site.

Having successfully used it with the following add-ons, now, version 3.6.10 has come out. Having had to follow the same procedure as before I have now installed version 3.6.10 but colorzilla doesn't work.

What is more annoying than that is that FF won't uninstall it. It says it will when I restart FF but it is lying to me!

what must I do to remove these issues.

the addons I use are

colorzilla
fast dial
web developer
no script

I meant colorzilla, not color picker

Why did you want to remove them? I know noscript and web developer still work fine. I'm not sure about colorzilla, haven't used it in a while and I'm not sure about the other one.

Many times though you can get almost any extension to work by disabling compatibility but could cause unstability or change the version number for colorzilla. You download the xpi to your desktop. Rename it a .zip file, extract the files, find the rdf file and change the version number with notepad. Save it rezip it, rename to .xpi and install it.

Why did you want to remove them?

I don't want to remove them. When I look at the add-ons window/dialog box, it says the version 2.2.2.1 "will be installed when Firefox is restarted". When I click the restart button, FF shuts down, restarts and the dialog box continues to say the same thing. OH, and it is unusable, which is what drew my attention to it being problematic, in the first place.

I've unzipped and rezipped it and it is now a .xpi file again. How do I install it? When I click on it it says windows cannot open it. I have located a mozilla xpi installer package at fileinfo.com but when I try to download it, another dialog comes up saying

C:\DOCUME~1\Me\LOCALS~1\Temp could not be saved, because you cannot change the contents of that folder.

Change the folder properties and try again, or try saving in a different location.

I have 'changed' the properties of the Temp dir not to be read only but, it reverts to being read only almost straight away.
My settings for FF are such that I am supposed to be prompted for the location but it seems to be trying automatically to be downloading to the Temp folder.

You just go to file open in Firefox and browse for the xpi file, it should install it.

thanks aero.

groan. I did that and the dialog which appeared showed this

Firefox could not install the file at

file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Me/Desktop/ColorZilla.xpi

because: Install script not found
-204

I'm not sure exactly what you did because if you zip the entire file and rename it, it should work. What version of Firefox did you need it to work for? This might be useful for you: http://edgecrafting.blogspot.com/2009/03/firefox-3-disable-extension.html

I have the check disabled and colorzilla installed fine.

looks like I've got more issues because I cannot download because it says I don't have permissions to access the Temp folder no matter what preferences I give it.

I've done all the malware and av checks I know about and they show nothing wrong and I have done a registry check too, which cleaned up a few things.

I'm now at a loss as to what to try, except maybe re-installing the OS. And if I have to do that, it'll be linux this time.

any suggestions as to what I should try next?

Have you tried using ccleaner?

nope but I did use 'glary utilities'.

I'll try ccleaner as well though - I forgot about it.

thanks

You can contact "Firefox" support at http://support.mozilla.com/ (I am just suggesting )

lol. I tried that but ain't got a response yet.

Seems I got it sorted out. Can't say for sure yet but it seems that when the download was performed, it re-enabled the java runtime environment. disabling it - as I had done ages ago - has removed the issues I was having recently.

However when I try to download colorzilla, it doesn't happen. that's a niggly issue though, which I can overlook for now.

thanks for all your help.
