 I'm hoping to become a computer programer, taking some online classes. Mostly english, math stuff i need to get out of the way. I would love to get my start at programming, get a jump. How ever, i do not have tones of money to drop on flash programing soft ware. i will be buying a new, bare bones pc. Python lookes like an option, but may be a lot for a new bee. some direction please. Books, other posting, blogs what ever. Whats the best language to start with??? Thanks guys...

For me when I was a beginner, I started from Visual Basic and the book was "mastering visual basic".
Good luck

Here is the generic advice:
1. There is no best language, pick one and stick with it for a while.
2. Focus on learning concepts, strategies, and methodologies instead of languages.
3. On a budget, stick with free. This leaves plenty of options. C#, VB, Java, Python, Ruby are all favorites of mine, but there are plenty more.
4. If you need help on a specific language or problem, there are plenty of people here that will be willing to help out with questions.

I started in Flash, as there was a computer graphics class I took in highschool that accounted for both my computer and art requierment:). My teacher gave me a copy of Flash 8. From what I've seen, most people that use Flash haven't paid for it. There's also some freeware alternative IDEs- I've never used them, but NewGrounds has a whole list of everything from Flash alternatives to 2d and 3d imaging to sound editing software.
Anyway, there's a lot of free guides online- Sun actually has a great guide on their site that teaches you pretty much everything about Java. I also found Super Review books (by REA) to be great sources for information. All you really need to know, though, is the basic syntax and how to go about running your programs, they all have very similar structure which you will recognize if you've ever taken algebra- functions, variables, integers, strings, arrays. Switching from one language to another is easier than learning a language from scratch. I went from actionscript to PHP and now I'm getting into Java and C++.

There is much help here. (http://exitfegs.co.uk/Sources.html)
Use the search facility. Single words are often best for this.
