Hello everyone I am completely new to this forum. I actually found it because I have been reading tutorial after tutorial and finally got stuck with a problem that I cannot find a specific answer to. As the title states this is the first page I am working on so it is VERY basic. Well anyhow this is what I am running into

I am attempting my first try at adding css to a very basic website..it has a title header and two paragraphs no background images or pics or vids or anything yet. Well anyway in the tutorial I was reading the poster was discussing manipulating text on a page with css. The code he gave as a starter was
<p style="font-size: 125%;">blah blah blah</p>
Now I have worked with my code adding in what he said and I cannot get the css to make a change at all. I am not sure if I am making an error with the actual markup of my text or if I am perhaps missing a statement in the beginning of my file...all I have starting it off is
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd">
<html>
and so forth...
I guess basically I am asking if there is another piece of code I need at the top of the document to get the css to recognize or if I am messing something else up completely. Well anyways I am going to keep reading these tuts and hopefully figure this out I look forward to any help that you guys can offer. Thanks in advance!

well i have found another great tutorial site from searching these forums and this one seems a little more explanatory than some of the others I have been using. Sooo I will go back to the drawing board and start all over with these tuts and hopefully I will eventually figure this all out after combining all I have been learning...I am convinced I am going to teach myself this stuff =)

In line CSS (inside the tag itself) is not recommended unless you just have to do it that way. Use an external CSS file to start with as you add pages and link to it on every page. I would use the Universal Selector at the very top of the CSS file so as to clear all "junk" from the browsers so only your styles take over.
