I am improving my online shop. I would like visitors to be able to 'add to basket' and 'checkout' and pay using a credit card.
I work in Dreamweaver. Do you think I can set this up myself? What is involved?
Shop so far:
And which is a good UK bank to do this with?
Many thanks for any advice,

You can use PayPal's gateway for handling secure credit card transaction. Otherwise, you would have to get your hosting service to provide a secure server and you would have to pay for a security certificate. Your control panel should have all the apps that need to be installed for a payment gateway or an eCommerce site with Cart. Not many people know how to set all this up which is probably why they sign up to use PayPal's code and server.

If you're talking about a shopping cart feature, http://www.mals-e.com/ is great. It's free and you can set it up to accept credit cards and paypal as well. You just link your shopping page to their site.

# The Phone Solution - most small to medium sized merchants use a dedicated phone line just for their terminal. Occasionally, with a preferred processor like Encore Payment Systems, you can find the latest terminals capable of dual processing either on broadband, or via telephone, without ever blocking the line, saving you money on multiple lines.
# The PC Desktop Solution is a software program that can be installed on most PC computers and will connect behind a credit card processors firewall to so you can type in a sale to be processed. This solution is also commonly used for call centers. It is also a solution that is used for businesses that require recurring billing.
# The E-commerce solution is for online payments where the payer and payee can be at remote locations and may never have met or spoken over the phone. There are two types of E-commerce credit card processors: (1) Third-party processors like PayPal, Google Checkout, 2CheckOut, etc., (2) and then 'true' merchant account processors like First Data, Moneris, Nova Merchant Funding, etc. Depending on your solution, the transaction can be conducted via a simple email when you send the payer an email invoice. Or it can be complex involving setting up a business's website with shopping carts using certified gateways.
# The Retail Credit Machine is one of the most common solutions that most people are familiar with, just by being a consumer. They are small portable terminals that can have debit and/or credit cards swiped across them for instantaneous approval. These terminals can connect via phone lines, DSL internet, and on the the cellular networks - making some terminals completely mobile.
# Custom Built Point of Sale Terminals(POS) or Kiosks solution is one of the more expensive options available to businesses. If you have a enough money to invest you can have a specialize POS or Kiosk designed for your business to accept credit card payments.
