I'm looking for something more powerful than windows 7 disk error checker. Any recommendations?

Both, ideally. Which one does Windows 7 error checker do? The physical disk or the file system?

It does both. Click Right Drive icon -Properties, Tools;
Checking the drive option gives you the choice of two, one of which is to check for faulty drive sectors and to deal with them.
Error checking/ Check drive for errors.
Automatically fix the file system errors and/or
Scan for and attempt to recover bad sectors.
