Browser errors. please help

I am designing a website for a friend of mine.
the pages look fine in google chrome, firefox, but in IE page menu looks horrible.
any help would be appreciated.

You have

Should be
<a class="active"><span>Home</span></a>

You forgot about > sign after "active"
