For simply scanning I suggest Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.
For home use Avast and Comodo are what I recommend. Don't use both, pick one. Avast is a realtime antivirus, spyware scanner but Comodo while it is also a realtime, spyware scanner it does come witha firewall, a defense blocker as well as a sandbox for any software that you think might mess up your system. Both are free.

I use Firefox (BetterPrivacy, Ad Block Plus, etc) + OpenDNS and Avast! Anti Virus. (And common sense )
I (DID) use Comodo with it, as during install you can pick, between Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, Firewall, Sandbox.
I just used the Firewall, but removed due to the fact, I was just fine anyway and it used a bit much RAM for my liking.

I use AVG as my antivirus and Malwarebytes for spyware. This combo has worked really well for me for the past 4 or so years and I haven't changed since. The computer at my parent's house has Avast and that also works well for them too. I agree with what one of the previous posters said - choose only one antivirus because having more than one might make them malfunction.

I have used Malwarebytes for spyware and don't think about changing to another one. It is good.

I use Linux so I don't bother anyway. But the best combination of the three would be Comodo. It gives you ****loads of warnings and stuff each time you execute a program and stuff which is loads of security, but it is even more annoying than the windows UAC. But if you turn this off, the firewall works wonders.
Other than that I preferred ESET Smart Security (4) as an anti virus.
EDIT : Though I've not used it, OpenDNS seems to be excellent as well.

You can also try Spybot which is free.

i think a combination of using a secure browser (google chrome) and norton is a good way to be bug free

Advanced SystemCare by IObit.
The free version is mediocre, but the purchase version is a very effective anti-spyware.
In addition it can clean the registry database for all that the spyware or WINDOWS ITSELF have messed up

You know I'm getting the feeling we should have an anti-malware sticky that we can refer people to, this keeps coming up over and over and over again.
This is definitely a topic that gets people worried so....

I go with saudzforum, BitDefender is the best AntiVirus and Spyware i have ever seen... next comes Avast... certain trojans and viruses which Avast / McAfee not able to recover, was done by "BitDefender 2011 - The King in Anti-X"
Also, its very much cost effective...

I used to run Ad-Aware by Lavasoft for this purpose before. However, my anti-virus software, which is ESET Smart Security version 4 already indicates that it is already an anti-spyware aside from being an anti-virus. Didn't know that the browser being used matters for safety from these. Thanks.

be VERY careful about which program you use, because there are TONS of 'anti-spyware' programs that are actually scams and will brutally hack your system. I use spybot, avg and anti-malwarebytes. between those 3, I think you're good. they will sometimes catch different things.
