Just post this in the header of you page:

<link rel="icon" href="favicon.ico" />

Image must be saved as .ico. You can download the Photoshop ICO Format plugin here (http://www.telegraphics.com.au/sw/#icoformat). Once installed, everytime you go to "Save As" option, you will be able to save as .ico.

I've attached a copy of your graphic converted to .ico.

Ok. I inserted the Code under the header and it did not work. Here is what is looks like:

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head>
<link rel="icon" href="favicon2.ico" />
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type"
content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
<title>How to Quit Smoking</title>
<link href="style.css"
rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
<style type="text/css">
<!--
.style3 {
color: #990000;
font-size: 24px;
}
.style8 {
color: #990000;
font-size: 18px;
}
.style10 {font-style: italic}

Did you even upload your favicon? Your code is looking for favicon2.ico but its not where you say it is.

I have the favicon2.ico file saved in my downloads folder. Do I have to put the file into a certain folder?

It needs to go into the same directory as your web page.

On your host the favicon needs to be in the root of your site in the same place you uploaded your page to.

Does that mean I need to create a folder in my ftp client with my website and favicon in? Right now, all I have is an images folder.

No just put it in the same place (the root) as your index.html file and rename it to favicon.ico not favicon2.ico

Do I have to do anything with the coding in the website?

In your code change where it says favicon2.ico to favicon.ico, upload favicon.ico to the root of your site and thats it. Nothing more. This isn't hard to do. Its the basics.

I did what you told me and the icon is not showing up. Here is the code:

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head>
<link rel="SHORTCUT ICON"
href="http://www.quitting-smokingnow.com/favicon.ico" />
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type"
content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
<title>How to Quit Smoking</title>
<link href="style.css"
rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
<style type="text/css">
<!--
.style3 {
color: #990000;
font-size: 24px;
}
.style8 {
color: #990000;

Don't use the full url but now there is an issue with your host. I suggest contacting your host and telling them that your .ico doesn't display, it tries to download instead.

favicon displays fine for me, it does download if you access it directly but i think thats a browser specific feature.

try clearing browser cache and updating any bookmarks (delete and re-add them)

how do you know that it is trying to download the icon instead?

For future reference, you shouldn't need to d/load any specific software to create an .ico file.

I generally create my ico as a .jpg (16x16) then in windows explorer just change the file extension to .ico

Easy!
