Hey!

I've been wanting to re-install Windows XP on a friend's Asus Eee Netbook and I'm not sure if anybody has experience in this area but I've run into a wall. The process of formatting the USB and then transferring the OS files over using several different applications (WinToFlash, PEtoUSB, WinSetuptoUSB etc.) has been overall successful.

The actual installation unfortunately has not been. In the BIOS, The Boot Device Priority can be chosen between the actual internal HDD, Removable Device, ATAPI CD-ROM, or disabled. The Hard Disk Drives setting can be chosen between the internal HDD and the Kingston USB (2GB). Since I couldn't choose the USB stick on the Device Priority setting, I switched the Hard Disk Drive Priority with the USB being 1st (HDD being 2nd). I then went back to Boot device priority and was able to choose between the USB, removable device, atapi cd-rom, or disabled.

I found this already quite strange as I thought the USB drive would be seen as a Removable Device (in this case no). I thought maybe it has something to do with missing drivers?

Anyway, I skipped the possibility of missing drivers and proceeded with the adjusted BIOS settings. I started the XP setup and then it came to the part where you have to choose a partition to install on. Unfortunately for me, I only saw one partition (no unpartitioned space). This partition space was my USB drive with my Windows XP installation on it. I couldn't chose the internal HDD partitions.. Why not?

Help?

Cheers

Sean

The harddrive in the netbook needs drivers in ordered to be accessed and they need to be put on the usb drive so you can find them if needed. Remember that part of the setup that says something like press F6 if you need to install additional drivers? Well that is where you install the needed drivers. What is the exact model of the netbook?

The exact model of the netbook is an Asus Eee PC 1005HA.

So would I use a PEbuilder or something to combine the drivers or what is your way of going around this?

I installed Windows Server 2008 R2 with USB drive, I however wonder how can this be possible for Windows XP. If you find one, please post an update. Its certainly helpful to install it with USB. I got the image from Dreamspark as I have an account.

Ya, I heard that there are some modules of PCs that can boot form USB. It is really very awesome. But I did not yet try any of them.

Or if you have a cdrom but your bios doesn't support booting off of usb then you can use this to force it to.

you could use grub the same way as well, theres a problem atm though with some programs that break duel booting (http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/ucgi/~cjwatson/blosxom/debian/2010-08-28-windows-applications-making-grub2-unbootable.html) since they write outside the partition.....

you'll also need to pull in sata drivers if your using anything below ?service pack 3? if you are using a sata drive and cables, otherwise windows wont be able to see the hard drive to install to
