Checkout this site, it plays cool music the second you land there.
How do they do it? I saw the source code but it doesn't make sense to me. Is there a way to save that music to your own computer after you here it?

Thanks for any help, here is the link:

I don't hear anything (lucky me)...but since I see a flash movie, it's probably in the soundtrack. I think there's a little program to pull the sound off the movie from the file located in your temp internet file folder. Look for the .swf extension...and check here (http://board.flashkit.com/board/forumdisplay.php) for the program. :D

<BGSOUND balance=0 src="c:\windows\application data/microsoft/welcome/welcom98.wav" volume=0>

theres anther tag like this which also directs to a local folder. maybe the flash file as well

Wow, is that sound file on all computers or just Win 98 or what, does anyone know?

I'm guessing that it is embedding background sound -- you may view a tutorial at this webmonkey address (http://hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey/geektalk/97/04/index4a.html?tw=multimedia)

No I figured it out. It's simply playing the Microsoft 98 welcome wav file. And because it's on your own hard drive, it starts playing immediately.

And if it isn't on the clients computer they simply don't hear it.

That would make sense why I could not hear it on my Macintosh:)

Webmonkey has some great tutorials about different ways to stream audio -- I'd read on if you are looking into it anyways.

Actually, thinking about it, linking to a local sound file isnt a bad idea, if of course you don't mind that some people wont hear it. You'll be guaranteed that itll play immediately, and it doesnt half cut down on the bandwidth :D

you could, scroots' words of wisdom and problems.

detect the OS and link to varying files depending on OS, so that the majority will hear something.

somebody on this forum did a massive browser study and how to detect them, it would guess your info and you would correct it.

I will look for it.

Win98 only I'm afraid. I have that .wav on my machine...but it still doesn't play. :) Ahh...The best laid plans of mice and men...:D

However, I think Media Player comes with Windows. Win95 comes with 2 .wav's in c:\WINDOWS\MEDIA\Start.wav and The Microsoft Sound.wav while Win98 comes with 9 .wavs including those in Win95.

Try this one:

<BGSOUND balance=0 src="c:\WINDOWS\MEDIA\The Microsoft Sound.wav" volume=0>

This one works for me but not the Welcome.wav

Ask someone what WinXP has in the Media folder. :cool:

Windows XP has:

Windows XP Start.wav
Windows XP Startup.wav
Windows XP Logon Sound.wav

All spelled and spaced as such

i would say that its a bad idea to use .wavs that are on everyones computer for that very reason. its irritating hearing the noises that you hear every start up

Aww...Too bad. I thought maybe Microsoft had just kept the .wavs of old and expanded on them.

No matter...You could still take a sound you liked from each OS's media folder and put them in...but I dunno what whould happen if they had 2 of the sounds...and which would play...or if they'd play at the same time.

Maybe someone could shed some light on how to do this. Javascript perhaps?:D

Off subject -- When I was 18, I won some writing awards, did some speeches, bs, yadda; if you're in america, you should be able to find some of my stuff in Barnes & Nobles and other misc. corporate america... but while I was doing a writers gig, I went down to Monterey California (birthplace of John Steinbeck and the Famous Cannery Row), and saw his original house where he grew up. There is a man who lives there, maintains it, and gives tours and samples of his work; along with discussions.

Long story short, if you would like some material from him, I will give you his number and address and he'd be more than happy to help out. Genius man -- discussed the life and loves of Steinbeck and his obsessions. His stories all have symbolism of King Arthur -- his personal journals sound as if he thought he really was.

Favorite book of Steinbeck: The Red Pony.

That's my writing Rant for the day.

Hey, I get glued to this computer all day, whaddya expect:D

I'll PM him next time, wanted to know if he needed some info on the Steinbeck is all and prove that it's credible.

In the future, I'll go to other forums for that.

Quite interesting about Steinbeck
</offtopic>

You could use javascript to detect the os and if the os is say windows 98 it will play a .wav file which is normally on a windows 98 machine.

<ontopic; return true> Good idea...or have a hidden jukebox which plays sounds consecutively. It goes down the list playing each file from each OS as it goes...but the js would probably be a lot shorter code-wise. :o <ontopic; return false>

<excessive coding forum sarcasm>
As much as I love this music discussion, I still wonder why you would want to do it (unless for pure fun of knowing how), lord knows music is annoying enough on the majority of the websites out there, why would you want to repeat the windows intro?

<?huh?> Well, it's not limited to just the windows intro... :p <?huh?>

Yeah, but it is limited to windows sounds isn't it? Ones that are already loaded into the system of everyone's computer? I just thought that might get old...

That is why I will stick with what I have. Welcome98.wav It's a little Kick-*** rock song, sounds like AC/DC.

It's just a little extra treat for people who have that file on their computer. It just kind of freaks you out the first time you land on a page and rock music just starts playing instantly.
