"Tentative" Validation

Finally ceding to "get with the times," this morning I attempted a sample XHTML 1.0 Transitional validation. My ultimate result (and just as I was celebrating a premature victory)?The document located at <http://www.unpoedic.com/xhtml.htm> was tentatively found to be Valid. That means it would validate as XHTML 1.0 Transitional if you updated the source document to match the options used (typically this message indicates that you used either the Document Type override or the Character Encoding override).preceded by the prattle,

DOCTYPE Override in effect! Any DOCTYPE Declaration in the document has been suppressed and the DOCTYPE for «XHTML 1.0 Transitional» inserted instead. The document will not be Valid until you alter the source file to reflect this new DOCTYPE.Apart from convincing my puny little mind to undertake this mania in the first place ;-Þ, where did I go wrong?

If you insert the doctype you validated it for in the document itself, it would validate. As you overrode any doctype that might be there, it didn't validate the actual document - it validated the document as it would have been using the doctype you specified.

Am I to then, somehow, disable the doctype override?

The doctype override is only there for trying to validate documents that lack a doctype. The encoding override is there for the same reason. To fix the encoding problem if you ever have it, see <http://codingforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19942>
