I have windows 7 and I really want a desktop icon in the task bar,but I cannot do this as the icon seems to be missing. Finding the option desktop in the start menu, I used to be able to create a shortcut but I cant do this now. Can anyone help as I have got used to using the desktop button.

Do you want an Icon that minimizes everything and shows the desktop or an icon that opens the desktop folder in windows explorer?

In the first case, there is a rectangle at the bottom right corner of the task bar, click it.

In the second case, you can navigate to the desktop in windows explorer, you can find it at c:\users\<your user name\desktop. You should be able to right click ----> send to ----> desktop (create shortcut).

The only problem here, is it packs the shortcut into the existing windows explorer icon, if you right click on it, you will see your shortcut loaded.

Yes I have Windows 7.

Navigating to the path I posted previously will get you to your users home directory, which is where the desktop is. The desktop is simply a folder, all you need to do is click the folder and create the shortcut to that.

I have managed to obtain a desktop icon, but I cannot fix it to the task bar at the bottom of the desktop, it will not stay there, any idea?

Right-clicking on the taskbar > toolbars > desktop will give you a desktop shortcut, it won't be an icon though.

Yes, I have tried this, but it does not revert to the desktop only a to a reduced list of what is on the desktop, I need the desktop as if I download for instance I need to revert to the desktop from the website and there is no way I can do this, other than to close the website. How annoying, anyway around this?

Windows 7 has a desktop preview button, the first screenshot here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/features/desktop-enhancements.aspx

shows it at the bottom right corner of the task bar. All you will need to do is click it to get immediately to your desktop.

Checked out the link, cool features will take some getting used to though. At least it is better than not being able to get to the desktop. Thanks for posting
