I want to connect to my daughter's computer and work on her computer remotely. I have had people do this with me and my computer but I don't know how they connected. I find MS help to be lacking in detail. When she has problems or she needs to install something I just can't help her over the phone. I would rather just take over and do it from my computer.

Any ideas?

I use Teamviewer for all of my family members. Its free for personal use. If its just a one off thing you could have her download Teamviewer Quick Support. Its a standalone exe, no install needed. It will run and give her an ID and password to use. You will need to install the full version of Teamviewer. You can have it setup to run at startup on your system so you could even access yourself when away from it. You can do the same on her computer so you don't ever need to have her actually run teamviewer. It will be just running. You can set it to where you set your own password. You can even have a partner's list that allows you to store the info for those computers kind of like an im client.

I initially thought about Windows Remote Desktop, but that would only work if she has a pro version and knows how to set it up on her end. Since she needs you to work on it, the last part is doubtful.

Windows XP (and above?) has a Remote Assistance feature. She initiates a request which is emailed to you with an access link. I've never done more than play with it, though.

I guess I'll beat someone else to the punch and point out VNC as an option. Last time I messed with it, it didn't suck as much as it once did. Still needs setup on her end, though.

Another program to look at is CrossLoop (http://www.crossloop.com/download.htm?affid=xl&src=hp_download_footer). The program has gotten a lot more commercialized in the last few years but it is still free.

I've used LogMeIn (http://logmein.com)for quite a few years now, free and works really nicely.

I remember having to help someone via logMeIn, I believe it worked quite well.

You can do this with cygwin. However, I'm sure that would be over her head.
