'explore' and 'open' function on the start menu dyed out when right clicked

hello,
since my computer crashed (would not boot up properly, stuck in ms dos) i could not right click my start button and hit explore or open, why is this? the actual button is dyed/greyed out, a lightish grey.
i am currently running windows 98..
with only 400mhz and only 128mb ram.

i shall be getting a new computer soon, but this ancient monster is still fast and is working almost fine.

That sounds like the directory where profiles are stored somehow got removed or renamed? Under Windows 2k it's in the root and called "Documents and Settings" but 98 may have it somewhere else or call it something else so look to see if you can find that directory using the Windows Explorer.

Why replace the system if it's still fast enough?

yes its just getting very old, and i dont think it will cope with the later programs and technologies..

what i meant in as fast, it is fast with the simple procudures like paint, internet explorer..and other easy tasks.
